St. Timothy and the Education of Kids

Normally I don’t post on the saints, as the Aardvark and Seminarian Jay Winters usually have those covered.

Today, though, was the day of St. Timothy, recipient of two letters from St. Paul that are included in the New Testament.

The second letter, third chapter, fourteenth and fifteenth verses, contain my confirmation verses for which I am thankful to my pastor in Kansas City, MO. The Latin in the top of NR is from the Vulgate for that address.

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom(pl.) you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. (ESV)

The Vulgate has the phrase ab infantia for “from childhood”, and of course this is more literally translated “from infancy.” Seminarian Lehmann informs me the Greek agrees with “from infancy.”

I bring all this up because today both kids made Dad proud today. My “older” has been learning the Creed whenever we can, despite my being gone a lot of the time. The only times we can really work on it are when I watch the kids at home or at bath time.

So we start through the Creed tonight, and the older one makes it through “I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth…”

…when the younger twin jumps in, “and in Jesus Christ, his only son.”

So yes, we celebrate that, with lots of bubbles. The younger girl really likes bubbles. :)

The older one continues, all the way down to “was crucified, died, and was buried.” Then she says, “He descended into heaven.” We have to work that one out, but the error is understandable because of the parallel line two lines later, “He ascended into heaven”. Her efforts continue, “and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.” A little extra, but I’ll take it. They are just four. :)
